Exploration through Research

Our Mission

This center is dedicated to the use of modern genomics analysis as applied to problems involving, but not limited to, the origins of life, Astrobiology, ecosystem dynamics, the biology of spaceflight, and life in extreme environments. These areas are of particular interest to NASA because they provide the scientific motivation for manned, and unmanned missions.

To facilitate NASA's research in these areas, we have established a dedicated computational and data management resource, developed at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. This resource provides access to software and data that is uniquely suited to NASA's scientific research. Scientists from around the world are able to share data, and collaborate with NASA researchers on projects of mutual interest.

The facility is managed by our colleagues at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle Washington. ISB is a proven leader in genomic research. By partnering with NASA-ARC we create a powerful organization, capable of solving some of the most complex problems in biology.

What Is Astrobioinformatics?

Astrobioinformatics refers to the use of computational biology, computer science, knowledge management, and visualization, toward an understanding of how organisms interact and live in a space environment; and how life adapts and evolves in the context of extreme environments. The tools and data which are being gathered at this site will aid researchers in understanding fundamental biological processes that shaped planet Earth, and which are necessary for exploration of the solar system, and the universe beyond.
